Marketing Strategy 101 How to Build an Impressive List Overnight!

Marketing strategies like list building requires planning, hard work and a strategy - However, the long-term benefits are tremendous!

I’ll tell you why I believe a customer or email list is important.  I’ve related this story once before, but it bears repeating.  I once worked a summer for an Internet marketer that was doing very well for himself.

Wow, what an eye opener.

(If you would like to read a more detailed account of that story, click on this link:  The Lessons I learned from an Internet Marketing Millionaire.)

One day, while I was working on his hundreds of websites, we got into a conversation about what made him so successful in his Internet marketing endeavors.

He basically told me what I had already heard a hundred times in other places, but it bears repeating.

The List is Gold!
“The money is in the list.  Your list is absolute gold.  If you learn one thing from me, remember, the list is gold!” (Emphasis added.)

So, I guess you could draw from that conversation that a list is kind of important.  I mean, when someone successful leaves a hint like that you might not want to ignore it.

You Need to Have a List Building Strategy

However, building a list is not easy.  Just like anything else in business, you have got to have a plan and then execute it.  This is probably going to be the most important part of your overall marketing plan, and you need to focus on working it daily.

In order to make this as simple as possible, we will take this step by step.  This will also help you implement this strategy as quickly as possible.

Just keep in mind what Edison said, “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

Step 1 Determine your target audience.  If you don’t know who your niche audience is, you’re going to have a very rough time writing messages or a series of emails to them that they can relate to.  Marketing to everyone is marketing to no one.

So, if you don’t have a niche market you’re targeting, then you need to sit down
target audience
Choose your target audience wisely!
and decide what niche you are going to operate in. If you have absolutely no idea how to do this, there are loads of resources on the Internet to help you do this research.

Step 2 Determine your email marketing objectives.  Once you know, love and understand who your target market is, you can then decide what you’re going to do with your campaign.  Here are some questions that you may want to consider in your list building strategy:

  • Do you want to just connect with an audience on a regular basis?
  • Are you going to raise awareness of your product and brand?
  • Are you going to dazzle your audience with your vast subject knowledge in an effort to be seen as an authority?
  • Or, are you merely going to sell your product or service to your audience right out of the starting gate?

These are questions you need to answer before you begin to actually build your list.  Once you have a plan for communicating with your prospects or audience, you will have a much easier time planning your email subjects and content.

Step 3 Set up a tracking system for your campaign.   Once you begin your email campaign, you’ll want to have a way to see how many people are opening your mail and how many of them are clicking on the links you are providing them.

Most of the email services online will have features like this that are built in. The best ones are: AWeber, Constant Contact, and MailChimp.  These are the three I have used in the past, but of course, there are a slew of others out there.

Tip:  In my opinion, I would go with a cheaper company initially so that I could learn the ropes of email marketing first.  Then, if you really stick with this strategy and move forward, you can then transfer your email addresses to a more high powered and expensive company. If you are starting your business the dirt-cheap method, you can always use a free auto responder for a while like SendFree.

Once you have a mailing list that is starting to grow rather quickly, you can migrate your list over to a paid system.  SendFree doesn't have any tracking or other services with their free version, but you can always upgrade later, if you wish.

These services offer all sorts of tracking for email campaigns, especially Aweber, which is the premier email service on the Internet today.  However, you will probably pay more for these bells and whistles than you would with other companies.

Step 4 Build a worthy landing page.

In case you don’t know, a landing page is the page your readers will go to once they click your email link, ad link or link in a blog or website post.  One of the big mistake most people make is that they have people go to their home page.

The page you should be sending them to should be the page that you reference in your email campaign, blog post or other link.  The landing page needs to be relevant to the email that you are sending the prospect or reader from.

If you send an email to a reader about a blog post that you've written, just make sure that the link you feed your readers goes to the relevant post you've written.

What is the purpose of your landing page?

Is the purpose of your landing page to get someone to buy a product?  Is it to just collect an email address?  Do you want people to download an app from your site?

Who is your audience?

This is a question that you should have answered well before this.  You need to know your niche market and how to cater to their needs.  You should know what type of lingo they are attracted to and how they are going to relate to your style of writing and marketing message.

Where did my readers come from?

The best hedge against building a different page for each different place your prospects come from is to make sure your offer and email sign up are prominent on all of your pages.

If you want to see a really good example of this take a look at the Boost Blog Traffic site. http://boostblogtraffic.com/   Every time you land on this site, the first thing that you’ll see is their opt-in box making you an offer that is rather irresistible.

Booyaahh!  Boost Blog Traffic's Site
Asks you to sign up at the top of every page.

I should tell you that Boost Blog Traffic is an excellent resource site with some of the best blogging tips I have ever read.  Just outstanding!

In a blog, you can easily create an about me page as well as a home page.  I would have a way for these individuals to sign up or join your email list on all of these pages.

With a blog post, you can easily make it so that your opt-in box appears on every post.  This would be most advantageous and would save you a lot of time.  (Unless you are selling multiple products, then you are going to need a way to have a different sales page for all of the different items.

Red Bull has an interesting, yet clear call to
action on their Facebook page.

Step 5 Write a clear call to action (CTA).  When people come to your landing page, you have to assume that they are reading and comprehending on an 8th Grade level.  So, you’ll want to make  sure that your call to action as clear as possible and that they’ll know exactly what to do.  Use large, bold text when you tell them what to do, too.

You can also use arrows, different colors and a host of other indicators that will direct your prospects to take the desired action that you want.  Just remember, the simpler you make things, the more people you’ll have signing up to your website.

Step 6 Use advertising copy to get prospects to take action.   If you have absolutely no idea how to write ad copy for your landing page, you may want to consider hiring an ad copy specialist to get the job done.  A good copywriter will create a powerful headline for you, that will draw in your readers in and influence them to take immediate action.

Step 7 Minimize the number of fields to fill out.  Make sure that you minimize the number of fields that are needed to get a person to sign up.  Unless you are asking them for ordering information, you really don’t need to collect home address and phone numbers.  Most web savvy marketers just ask for email addresses because their sales funnels are designed to sell bigger ticket items later on down the marketing road.

Step 8 Offer them something for signing up.  If you are just starting out,
you can offer a free report on a subject that people are passionate about in your niche for signing up to your email list.  The report doesn’t have to be more than a few pages long, and you can knock one of these out relatively fast in a weekend.  Once that is complete, you can begin working on bigger and better things like 20 to 50 page eBooks.  Once you have an eBook completed, you can then offer that for signing up to your list as well as the free report.

TIP:  The more things you can offer someone, the better the chances are that people will sign up to your mailing list.  I know a copywriter that offers 10 free eBooks for signing up to his email list.  The eBooks aren't flimsy either, I remember one of them had at least 100 pages of high-impact information in it alone!

So the more you have to offer, the easier it will be to reel in email addresses!

Step 9 Project a professional appearance.  You don’t want a flash site, but you need to have a site that professionally projects what it is that you do.  Once again, using the dirt cheap start up method I’m so fond of, you can easily get a very simple and elegant design from a freelancer on a site like Fiverr.
When you’re starting out it is always best to start out as cheap as you can, with something simple.  This particular blog started out on Blogger and at some point it’s going to be migrated over to WordPress.

Why?

Even though I know a little about long-tailed keywords and all that other SEO junk, I’ve read repeatedly that having a regular blog (not a free one) with a regular .com will work wonders for your rankings.  Plus having a professional appearance is important too.

Step 10 Produce incredible content.   The natural inclination of almost all entrepreneur newbies is to gloss over blog posts and web pages.  You need to adopt the mindset that people are going to reference and read what you’re producing.  If they are going to spend time reading your material, then you need to try to make it the best that you can.

Many times I've seen the question asked, “How many words should I write?”  I've seen all sorts of answers for that, but as my research concludes, that large, well-written, 2000 + word posts do the best. Yeah, that’s a lot of work, but if you want something bad enough, you’ll do it.

TIP: One other thing, try to start with the end in mind. Remember that you are building a reputation, brand, and persona that will be with you a long time.
I recently watched a series of interesting Youtube videos on marketing that a young entrepreneur was producing.  Obviously, he was trying to appeal to a younger, hipper audience, because his theme was marijuana based.  He had some dope-head kind of theme, logo, etc.
Even though I liked his video and advice, I can’t help thinking that he was setting himself up for failure further down the road with his business.  Once he gets older and decides to take his business real serious, he may have a hard time shedding that old image.

At any rate, you need to choose your path carefully, because you don’t want to be changing horses in a middle of a stream.    If you start gaining a particular following, you’ll want to keep it in place for as long as you can.  So, keep in mind that you’re going to have to live whatever you create.

How to Turn Your Zombie Facebook Presence into a Living Being!

If you are going to use Facebook to influence people and move them in a direction that you want them to go, you really need to pay attention to this post.  There is a distinct reason why so many companies actually hire people to run their social media marketing programs.  That reason is it takes time.

If you are going to use social media to influence people in a major way, it will take a lot of your time.  Continuous, daily, scheduled time.  You've got to show up…regularly and keep showing up.  This is a relationship game that requires a dedicated time investment.

So, just like all other forms of Internet marketing, the more they see, love, and trust you the better off you’ll be.  This leads me to my topic subject, transforming your zombie like Facebook presence into a persona that people can relate to.

I love meeting people.  Online, offline, I just love human interaction.  In my humble opinion, nothing is worse than talking to a piece of cardboard.  Actually, there is something worse: READING something that was written by a piece of cardboard!

I must confess, this is a facet of writing Blog posts that I need to be more conscious of, myself.  If you can somehow inject some of your REAL personality into your social media efforts, you’ll find that you will have success at a much faster rate.

On the local news that I watch every morning before starting work, I watch the local news, mostly to see how bad the weather is going to be for the day.  Most of the newscasters or warm and friendly, even when they are reporting accidents and crime in the area (Some of them almost report the death and destruction with glee…but I digress.)

There is one reporter that is usually at the site of the crime and just about every morning and when she reports the news like a bored zombie.  She looks like she just came from a funeral; her face is sullen and emotionless.  Every time we see her my says the same thing, “Is she really alive?”
So, you need to insert your personality in to your posts whenever you can.

Talk About Other Things, Even if it’s “World War Z”!

Make sure you talk about off-topic issues once in a while.  Usually, if you do nothing but talk about your niche, no matter how great the information is, you’ll
be perceived as boring.  However, that’s not to say it can’t be related to your core topic in some way.

I used to get Dan Kennedy’s marketing newsletter on a regular basis, and I was always amazed at how easily and seamlessly he could shift to a subject that did not appear to be on the subject of marketing, but was.  He would talk about subjects that were related to his niche like: time management, celebrity issues, TV shows he liked or disliked, etc.  However, these issues did relate to his overall marketing message.

Current Events – Staying Sensitive to Things Around You
If there has been a horrible event caused by natural disasters, terrorism or even a Zombie apocalypse, you will be perceived as unthinking and uncaring if you continue talking about your business.

So, be very careful when dealing with important social issues.  You can really damage all of the work, time and branding of your business if you ignore other people’s pain and anguish during trying times.

What Type of Software and Hardware Should I Use to Make YouTube Videos With?

If you haven’t been following my posts this week, you should probably go back and check out the other posts I made on the subject of marketing on the Internet using videos.

You can read them here:

This post I’m going to cover what types of software that you should buy in order to create high quality videos for your Internet marketing efforts.  In my last post I hit on the idea of teaching your prospects something of real value in your videos, rather than using your videos to merely sell them something.
Personally, I think that’s the way to go, and that’s what I've been doing.

Here’s the Good News…

The great news is you don’t need real high-end video software or equipment to create a good video quality video.  Most of the small video cameras on the market today mounted on a sturdy tripod is all you need in a camera.

I used to do wedding videography, and what I was told at the onset of starting my business is that the main reason to have a huge camera with all the bells and whistles on it was so that the client would see it and think you were professional.

I’m not saying that there aren't really great wedding videographers out there that don’t really need that type of equipment.  There are some truly incredible videographers that Hollywood sized projects.  They are also very expensive to hire too.

But for creating an instructional or marketing video, a decent video camera that you can buy at Best Buy, Amazon or Costco will easily fill the bill.  You can very easily get a great camera for this for under $500 if you so desire.

The other recommendation I would make (if you can afford it) is to pick up some cheap clip on microphones that’ll hook up to your camera.  Now, once again, you can still make great videos without that stuff.  I made one once without a pickup mic and it came out OK.

Another recommendation I would make is to get some cheap tele-prompting software.  This is software that you can use to have your script scroll up your computer screen so you can read it while looking directly at your camera.

I usually mount my camera right behind my laptop so that when I face the camera my scripts scrolls upward and I can read it while looking at the camera.
Here is a clip I made without using a clip on mic and using the software I just told you about.

I’m reading from a computer screen while looking directly at the camera:

The Type of Software That You’ll Need
I usually use two software programs: Sony Vegas Pro and Camtasia.  Sony Vegas is great because it gives you excellent production quality editing at a relatively inexpensive price.  There are also other Sony Vegas editing products for around $100, but Vegas is still a good deal for around $300.

Product DetailsThere is a learning curve using Vegas, and there are one or two books that I’ve used as a reference for it.  Actually, what I usually do is surf around YouTube to find videos on what I’m trying to specifically learn on Vegas.  There’s tons of videos on YouTube about Vegas however, you’ll have to go through a bunch of poorly made videos in order to find a good one that gets to the point and explains things clearly.

The other software program that I mentioned was Camtasia.  Camtasia is screen capturing software and it records what you are doing on your computer screen for instructional purposes.

However, everyone uses Camtasia even marketers use it to get their message out.  You can get a copy of Camtasia for about $200 and I recommend that if you start making videos and you can only afford one of these programs, Camtasia is the one I would buy.

Here is an example of what Camtasia can do:

Instructional Photoshop Video

In my next Blog Post, I’m going to show you the proper way to structure your videos so that your customers and clients can really get some value out of what you have to offer and come to know you as a source of information they can know and trust.

Until then…

Get More Internet Traffic to Your Site by Using This One Simple Marketing Strategy

Most of the traffic generating ideas you read about on this blog look real easy.  One of the reasons for this is because I’m an actual, certified teacher. I’ve taught almost 30 different subjects in the last 20 years, and I believe in giving you concise information and instructions, rather than giving you a lot of “fluff”.

So, whenever I actually get around to putting down the exact steps to help you generate traffic to your site or blog, it is usually to the point.

A Bad Illusion

However, the problem with this is that gives you the illusion that doing the task is easy.  In Internet marketing NOTHING IS EASY.
I once saw a YouTube video where in the famous copywriter Gary Halbert talked extensively about marketing on the Internet.  One of the things he talked about was how much harder it was to sell things by way of the Internet than it was by direct mail.  One of the reasons he felt this way was because there are way too many distractions on here.

I’ve posted a video here where the late Mr. Halbert talks about Search Engines:

My Master’s degree is in Education Technology and for years I’ve observed how long it can take a student to find good, solid information using the Internet.  If you go to the library looking for a book on Renaissance art, chances are that if you know how to use a card catalog system it’ll take you 5 minutes to find an entire section of books on that subject.

But on the Internet, there are too many things competing for your attention.  There’s email, texting, gaming, advertisements, favorite sites and of course the biggest distraction…Social media.  And even if you happen to stay on task, finding a good site (despite how good Google’s algorithm is) can sometimes be very difficult.

If you don’t know how to look for something it can be quite difficult.

So, without going into great detail on situations where I had to help students find specific information I’ve learned one important thing.   If it’s difficult to find and sift through and find information on common subjects on the Internet, how much harder is it going to be to find your business on here?

Here’s The “One Easy Trick” I Told You About

The trick is simple in principle, but requires WORK.  As Edison so aptly put it,
“The only place you’ll find SUCCESS before WORK is in the dictionary.”

Here is the strategy: Becoming an authority or having an authority site.

There are several paths to becoming an authority, but the most popular way to become one on the Internet is by using a blog and regularly posting outstanding information on it.  Now, that’s a very simplified strategy or idea, but it’s true and it works.

However, the steps to becoming an authority or authority site require a lot of work.  Here are just a few of the things that you need to do to become an authority in your chosen niche.  (You do have a niche, don’t you?)

1.        Publish really great information about your niche on your site or blog.
2.        Make sure you link out to other valuable links in your niche that are relevant to what you are writing about.
3.       Post good quality info everyday on your blog or website
4.       Post short snippets about your updates to all social media sites you are associated with letting people know that you posted.
5.       Guest write in forums, other people’s blogs and anyone else that’ll let you as much as you can.
Make sure that you post your website links are on those posts.

That was the short and sweet answer.  You can accelerate this whole process by doing some offline marketing too:
1.        Do public speaking and give out your site address and email addresses
2.       Put your website address on every direct mail piece that you send out
3.       Make sure your email address has your website address on it.
4.       Write a book on Amazon and tell people there are bonuses on your site and place your site’s address in the book. (Side note – writing a published book will quickly make you an authority.)

web savvy Internet marketer
Here’s A Strategy On How To Become An Authority On The Internet In A Year

I’m sure that you’ve seen these strategies before.  However, it doesn’t hurt to reiterate them and remind you of what you have to do to move your Internet business forward.  In order to get your site really noticed, I’m including a link to a document that will really get you moving if you do most of what’s in it.

Years ago an IM superstar named Brett Tabke wrote a post o n a forum that later became a rather famous E-book on IM called “The 26 Steps” Here is a FREE copy of that document.  If you are even remotely serious about Internet marketing, then you’ll read this excellent document and begin to use the steps he so graciously shared with everyone.

One other resource I’ve already mentioned in another post is Bob Bly’s most excellent book, “How to Become an Authority in 90 Days or Less” And the link is to the post where you can get it.

How To Get The Ball Rolling In Your Business or Enterprise

Ken McCarthy is a name that has been around for quite some time.  He has been credited with coining the term "Internet Marketing".  His programs and  system seminars have been around for decades now.

He just posted this great video by the founder of Teespring, a custom T-Shirt company that is doing quite well on the Internet.  I found this video to be quite illuminating on how a company or business should acquire its first customers and then gain maximum trajectory.

Here is the link to Ken's site where the shortened video resides:

How to Load Up Your Calendar With Ideas for Your Blog Posts

In my last post, I went over one of the many ways you could use Google’s calendar to help schedule your blog posts, email messages or online articles.

In this post, I’ll show you how to use various websites to find topics that you can easily write. Moreover, I’m going to show you how you can also check to see whether or not these sources are worthy of even writing in the first place.

Note: I am absolutely NOT advocating copying other people’s work.  You can always write about the subjects and ideas in your own way and with your own words. But, you should never violate copyright laws under any circumstances.

I’m sure you won’t go to jail over this, but you’ll probably get sued. Not only that, it is dishonest. So, do not copy and paste for any reason!

Using the Calendar to Schedule Your Articles or Posts

Once you get a calendar that you want to use (standard, online, piece of paper, planner, whatever) you can now start to log in about 3 months of topics that you can write about.  You will be going to various sites to look up topics and then you will be looking at specifics within those topics.

This is the same way Oprah, Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, The View and a host of other talk shows come up with their subjects and content.  Ever notice how 99% of the people on those shows have written books???  They use this content method themselves to get loads of ideas.
Let’s get started with…Amazon.

Using Amazon to Generate Ideas for Your Articles and Blog Posts

Rather than waste a lot of your time writing up a huge description of how this is supposed to work, I’m going to take you by the hand, step-by-step and teach you exactly what you need to know.  The reason I do things in this manner is so that I won’t leave holes in my procedure.

I want you to have the full, unadulterated method to do this, so that it is “turn-key”.  In other words, you could pass these instructions on to other people and they should be able to do it with very little help.

ScenarioYou want to write about and share information on how to use social media on your blog.  However, you have no idea what to write about or what people are interested in.

Drilling Down to Find Your Topics

Here’s how you do it. (By the way, you can use the same method of research for creating information products, or finding a niche for your business.)

Step 1:  Go to Amazon.com website.

Click on “Books” in Amazon’s search field drop-down menu.

This will mean that you are only searching in the Amazon book category.  This is the ideal place to find topics related to what we want to write about.

Make sure you click “GO” on the search field.

Step 2:  Next, you will need to scroll down the page until you see “Books” on the left hand side of the screen.  These are the categories of books there are.

Now we can start drilling down and get very specific about what we want to write about.

In our case, we'll want to look in either the “Business and Investing” category, or the “Computers and Technology” category.

Click on the “Computers and Technology” category.

Step 3: Keep doing the drilling down process until we get to the social media books.  Here is the drill:

Computers & Technology ---> Internet & Web Culture ---> Social Media for Businesses

You should now see books listed in the middle of the page

(Yes, I could have told you to simply go into Amazon's search engine, and type in "social media" and you would have found these.  However, we are trying to generate ideas here!  By drilling down, you'll have access to all sorts of ideas and topics you may not have otherwise thought about!)

Using the Sort Menu to Find Reviews

Step 4:  I want you to move over to the right side of Amazon's page at this point.  You will see a drop down menu called "Sort By".  Open the menu and select "Most Reviews".

The reason we're using the sort menu to find the most reviews is because we are looking for the most popular books on this subject.

If there are a lot of comments, that's good thing because it means quite a few people actually read the book.  Also, they cared enough about it to comment, rate, and post it into Amazon.

Negative Reviews Are Important Too!

The other reason why highly commented on books are important is because you can look at the negative reviews and see what people WISH were in those books.

I recently did research on a piece of software a company was hiring me to write about.  I checked out the software they were selling on Amazon and in the process I looked at all of the negative comments people posted on Amazon.  By the time I was finished doing my research, I actually had enough ammunition to write an information product telling users how to overcome these problems.

So, negative reviews are also important.

On the right hand side of the books listed, you'll see a row of stars.  Some of them a colored in and others are not.  There is also a number next to the stars that indicates the number of comments made.

Step 5:  Click on the title of the book.  Next, you can actually click on the cover of the book to see the table of contents.

These are the subjects that people will be interested in.  If you were creating a niche, you could get real specific about it and write about a very specific top or angle of this subject.

Inside of Mr. Kerpen's excellent book, is a table of contents.  As a matter of fact, Amazon almost always has a "Look Inside" feature which shows you the Table of Contents of the book.

One of the chapters is called "Think and Act Like Your Customer".  You could almost make an entire niche out of a title like that.

Step 6:  Write down the idea on your calendar.  You should try to post a new blog post just about every 3 days or so.  Monday, Wednesday and Friday would be a good idea for spacing of your posts.

Step 7:  Scroll down the page and check out the reviews.  If you see anything negative or something people felt that was left out of a book like this, then you may have fertile ground for a hot topic.  So, look for opportunities in these types of comments.

Step 8:  Rinse and repeat.  Do the same procedure for as many books in your topic area as you can.  Just looking at the Table of Contents sections will give you a load of ideas, and you can take that title or idea, Google it and find a boat load of articles all over the Internet on that particular subject.

BONUS:  Another Way to Find Hot Topics in Your Niche To Write About

I recently watched an excellent video on how to use social media by a guy named Michael Hyatt.  Apparently Mr. Hyatt is pretty big in the Internet Marketing arena, but I had not actually heard of him until today.

Anyway, on this video he highlights 10 different ways you can use social media to boost your business or popularity on the Web.  You could use each one of these ideas to expand on in a series of blog posts very easily.

Here is the video:

On My Next Post:

I'm going to show you how to gain a huge following pretty quickly by using social media sites and a host of other ideas, so that people will actually come to your site and read your posts, opt-in to your email posts and eventually hand you wads of cash!

Until next time, God Bless!
